Sustainability and Traceability

What does sustainable fish and seafood actually mean?

We define sustainable seafood as: seafood fished or farmed in a manner that can maintain or increase production in the long term, without jeopardizing the health or function of the web of life in our oceans. According to David Suzuki, “Choosing sustainable seafood is an easy and effective act of consumer power that helps protect our oceans, and sends a strong signal to government and industry leaders that they should do the same. When you do consume seafood, make the most of it by eating sustainably.”

Our commitment is to provide you with traceable seafood from sources we know and trust and to work with responsible local fisheries to ensure we’re minimizing human impact on the oceans. We have taken an extra step to help you identify the sustainable sources in which your fish is coming from directly on our product labels. Find out more about how we source our fish here.

Why do you sell products from outside Nova Scotia?

Fish are migratory species. They need to be managed globally. While we have great stories to celebrate from right here in the Maritimes, we also can celebrate and support good management practices around the world. That’s while you’ll see things like BC sockeye salmon, albacore tuna and some species from Maine on our product list.

How do I know which products are local?

We take pride in our Maritime fisherfolk and want to showcase their amazing products. Our local suppliers are highlighted on each product page throughout our online store as well as on our labels in-store!

What does Ocean Wise recommended mean?

Ocean Wise Seafood is an ocean conservation program that empowers consumers and businesses to choose sustainable seafood options that support healthy oceans.
When a product is Ocean Wise recommended it means the product was produced sustainably with the most minimal effect on the environment. To learn more visit https://seafood.ocean.org/

General Questions

Can I shop in person?

We offer in person shopping at our retail location within HRM.

Does using frozen fish change the nutritional value?

The freezing process itself does not reduce the nutritional content of the fish. However, you can lose some of the water content during the thawing process, which can contain some of the water-soluble vitamins and minerals. This is generally lost in very low amounts and is considered a negligible difference.

Should I be concerned about mercury levels in fish?

Generally, fish that are higher in mercury are older, large fish that have been in the ocean for long periods of time – fish like fresh tuna, shark, swordfish, marlin, orange roughy, and escolar.

Fish that are not high in mercury and are not typically a concern include: salmon, char, trout, shellfish, crab, shrimp, trout, herring, haddock, Atlantic mackerel, sole, and lobster.

Do you sell sushi grade fish?

Yes we do!
When people are looking for sushi grade fish, they are looking for fish that can be eaten raw. This means the fish is free from parasites and other germs that may cause foodborne illnesses.

Fish that are frozen are okay to be eaten raw as freezing fish will kill any parasites and bacteria that may harm you. All of our Sustainable Blue products are considered sushi grade. Fresh or frozen, Sustainable Blue salmon is guarenteed to be parasite and antibiotic free!
