Warehouse Market Specialist

The Warehouse (WH) Market has become a community staple for Halifax’s North End community. It is a co-opted space housing Abundant Acres, Holdanca Farms, Afishionado Fishmonges, and Pop Culture Kombucha, not to mention several other vendors’ products. Running every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the WH Market has enabled access to locally grown and harvested produce, meat, and eggs, and sustainably-sourced fresh and fresh-frozen fish and seafood. With the opening of Espresso 46 and the start of the CSA season it has also become a convenient neighbourhood hangout with many familiar faces, returning customers, and old friends. The WH market strives to develop the local community food scene and is looking for a passionate individual to help facilitate this movement.

Salary

$14/hr., 40 hours a week

Terms of Employment:

Tuesday-Saturday, 6 month contract, Full Time, Overtime will be required

Job Brief:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and responsible individual to promote all WH market products to existing and potential customers and subscribers, while providing them with an exceptional customer experience. You will be expected to be equally knowledgeable in all WH market products, speak intelligently and enthusiastically about the products to customers, answer customer’s questions, and ask questions when necessary to other product experts. We are seeking a recent graduate from a sustainability, conservation, marine biology, environmental science, or management field to fill this role. We feel that an individual with an academic background that is applicable to the ideals of the WH market will allow for more informed decision making with respect to time-sensitive product and product knowledge and will enhance the customer service experience – particularly when questions regarding a products’ sustainability come up. Applicants will, ideally, have some experience in an education, retail, or management role. Successful applicants will also be responsible for opening and closing duties such as cashbox balance, restocking of all products, cleaning, transport of products from farms and processing plants to the market, and other tasks as they arise.

Qualifications:

Knowledge/Experience

  • Retail experience an asset
  • Knowledge of food and food systems an asset
  • Customer service experience an asset
  • Previous food market experience an asset

  • Valid driver’s license +5 years driving experience (mandatory)

Responsibilities

  • Collect payments via cash and card from customers
  • Direct customers in CSA and Catch of the Week pick-up
  • Educate new customers on how the difference subscription programmes work
  • Educate customers on the local food movement, food security, and food systems
  • Re-stock products as needed
  • Communicate with all three primary vendors regarding stock status of products, customers’ questions and cash transactions
  • Maintain a clean and friendly atmosphere
  • Help fine tune WH Market checklist and SOPs
  • Assist in farm logistics and market set-up
  • Transport products as needed
  • Such other tasks as may be assigned by the WH Market from time to time.

Mandatory Criteria

  • Valid driver’s license +5 years driving experience
  • Must have graduated within the past year
