Striped Bass, known as Ji’kaw to Mi’kmaq people, has always been prized for food and celebrations. Caught seasonally in the spring and fall, Striped Bass is a firm, white-fleshed fish with a rich flavor. The striped bass population in the Gulf of St. Lawrence is thriving. In the fall of 2018, Eel Ground First Nation launched Canada’s first commercial striped bass fishery in more than 30-years – and the community is determined to do things right. The fish overwinter and spawn in New Brunswick’s Miramichi River, where fishermen use trap nets and hand-select each bass. The fishery is run by local fishermen and the benefits extend to the entire community.
