Built to shorten the chain

Afishionado started with a problem worth solving. Seafood in Canada passes through processors, wholesalers, distributors and retail buyers. Each one takes a cut, and each one adds distance between you and the people who actually caught or raised your dinner.

We started in Atlantic Canada with a simple idea: shorten that chain. Keep the layers that add value. Cut the ones that don’t. That’s still the model.

Chapter two · The sourcing rule

Ocean first, always

We only work with fisheries and farms that take the long view. Every product we sell is Ocean Wise recommended, independently assessed on everything from population health to bycatch. That’s the floor, not the ceiling.

We started local and we’re still rooted in Atlantic Canada. When we source from outside the region, it’s because we found producers doing the work properly. Sustainable Blue, for example, raises Atlantic salmon on land in Nova Scotia with zero ocean discharge.

Chapter three · The cold truth

Frozen isn’t a compromise.

Everything we sell is frozen at peak quality. Freezing at source locks in the moment the fish came out of the water. By the time most “fresh” seafood reaches a counter, it’s already days into its journey.

Properly handled frozen seafood is often better than what the fresh case offers. We’d rather tell you that plainly than charge you extra for the word fresh.
