Built to shorten the chain

Afishionado started in 2014 with a problem worth solving. The seafood supply chain in Canada is long, complicated, and built around a series of middlemen who don’t touch the fish but all take a cut. Between the boat and your dinner plate, seafood can pass through processors, wholesalers, distributors, and large retail buyers, each one adding cost and adding distance between you and the people who actually caught or raised what you’re eating.

We started in Atlantic Canada with a simple idea: shorten that chain. Build a direct path from responsible boats and farms to the people who want to cook good seafood at home. Cut the layers that don’t add value. Keep the ones that do.

That’s still the model.

Ocean first, always

We only work with fisheries and farms that take the long view. Every product we sell is Ocean Wise recommended, which means it has been independently assessed against sustainability criteria covering everything from population health to bycatch to environmental impact. That’s the floor, not the ceiling. Some of our products carry additional certifications. All of them are sourced from producers we’ve vetted ourselves.

We started local and we’re still proudly rooted in Atlantic Canada. But the ocean isn’t a coastline. It’s a system. When we source from outside the region, it’s because we’ve found producers doing the work properly. Sustainable Blue, for example, raises Atlantic salmon on land in Nova Scotia using a closed-loop system with zero ocean discharge. That’s the kind of operation we want to support, wherever it happens to be.

We’ll always tell you where your seafood came from. If we don’t know, we won’t sell it.

What we sell, and how

We’re an online seafood market. Everything we sell is frozen at peak quality and shipped directly to your door. Frozen isn’t a compromise. Properly handled frozen seafood is often higher quality than what you’d find labelled “fresh” at most counters, because freezing at source locks in the moment the fish came out of the water. By the time fresh seafood reaches a store, it’s already days into its journey.

Our product line includes Atlantic salmon, haddock, scallops, shrimp, fish cakes, and seafood bundles built for real cooking. You can order one-time or set up a subscription. You can find us in select retail partners across Atlantic Canada if you’d rather pick up in person.

Our promise

We’ll talk to you the way we’d talk to someone standing next to us at the wharf. Honest about what we know, honest about what we don’t, and never trying to dress up a product to sell more of it.

You can count on real quality, full traceability, and seafood that supports the people and the waters it came from. That’s the whole point of what we do.
